Your friend owns a small recording studio used by local bands. He has asked for your help in specifying a computer system for the studio.
He wants to be able to record voices using a microphone and needs very high quality, so he doesn't think that the sound inputs on a normal PC will be good enough. He has heard of something called an analogue to digital converter and knows that this is important, but doesn't really know what it is.
He also wants to use a synthesis keyboard with a MIDI interface. He thinks he should run a sequencer to edit the music tracks, he's heard of Cubase but is not sure if it is the best choice. He would like the system to be able to store up to 1000 hours of music at very high quality and to be able to transfer the tracks to some kind of storage so that he can send it to publishers. He wants to connect to the internet using WiFi and play back the tracks over headphones, again with very high quality. Can you help him?

The owner of a local shop has asked for your help. She would like a system that would speed up the checkout process by automatically scanning the barcodes on items. Items such as vegetables won't have a barcode, so she would like to weigh these and have the computer automatically calculate the price. There is a system of security cameras in the shop and she would like to store the recordings from the camera for three days. She would like to be able to accept credit and debit cards for payment and print receipts quickly. Finally the computer system should be able to keep a record of the day's takings and calculate any tax due, so she will need software for this.
