Lesson Plan - 28th March 2013
Graham Macleod
Objectives: Revision of fundamentals of personal computer security
All pupils to have thought through physical and systems security and importance of encryption
The aim of the lesson is to give permission to pupils to take the role of an attacker when considering cyber security. The teaching points of the lesson are based on the IGCSE syllabus, in particular the section shown in the 'Exam question and answer' page. The aim is to prepare pupils for questions based on this outline and on the sample question - but to go beyond a mere list of defensive measures. Cyber security is an 'arms race' between motivated attackers and defenders and is best understood by thinking through the roles, techniques and motivations involved on both sides.

Starter: Introduction. Show recent newspaper headline and invite pupil discussion. Set the scene for the importance of the topic.
Principal activity: Introduce 'zombie' scenario. Pupils to work together in small groups to complete the story, using on-line form to submit their answers. Teacher to assist pupils in small groups to consider all possible aspects of the problem. This is the principal activity - the objective is that this will be pupil led, in small groups, with the teacher acting as prompt, coach and occasional irritant.
Extension activity: Pupils to review examples of 'pfishing' documents on website and complete revision quiz. Additional links have been provided for homework, research or general interest/discussion. These can also be the basis of a 'Plan B' approach involving whole class discussion.
Summary and plenary: Review of pupil contributions. Revision of main points and objectives.
